Saeed Taji Farouky and Michael McEvoy’s remarkable portrait provides a gritty, complex, and haunting look at a year in the lives of those soldiers. In some ways, they’re like soldiers everywhere.

In the village of Uz in northern Portugal, a family of farmers has been working the land for generations. Daniel is a younger member of the family and unlike many his age, who have been drawn away by the appeal of urban life, he has decided to stay. Following the cycle of the seasons and the village’s calendar landmarks, first-time director João Pedro Plácido draws warmth and humour from his look at a young man on the on the cusp of adulthood.
