The 20th Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival continues through Sunday, October 24, and enthusiasm continues to build. News crews were on hand for a full house screening of Paradise Lost 3 on Friday, and organizers have been overwhelmed by solid community support and excitement.

“It is so touching to see how much this festival means to the people of Hot Springs, and we will hopefully end with a bang,” noted Dan Anderson, Festival Director.

“We’re burning the candle with both ends right now, but the adrenaline and positive support we have right now is seeing things through. So many volunteers have stepped up to make it an amazing year,” chimed Jim Miller, Assistant Festival Director.

Wednesday, October 19 is sure to be a landmark date for the history of the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival and filmmaking in the State of Arkansas.

Two World Premieres will be shown, with directors present, including” John Frum, He Will Come” (7PM, Malco Theatre) and “The Living” (9PM, Malco Theater). Additionally, filmmakers will be present for “Finding Fidel” (3:13PM, Malco Theatre), Mineral Explorers (4PM, Malco Theatre) and “Sarabah” (8PM, Central Theatre).

“Wow, this may be the most amazing day of film I have ever been apart of,” notes Dan Anderson, HSDFI Program Director. “John Frum, The Living and Sarabah are must see films… it is truly stunning that all three directors are here in Hot Springs.”

“Sarabah” is a film about cutting-edge West African hip-hop rapper, Sister Fa, and her genre-bending music that tackles women’s rights issues in Africa. “John Frum, He Will Come” depicts a cargo-cult prophesy on the small island of Tanna, while “The Living” enters the world of funeral workers in Quebec.

Not to mention, Hot Springs’ own, Jonathan Kudabeck will screen his Arkansas-premiere of “Mineral Explorers,” and noted veteran filmmaker Bay Weyman will be in-person to screen “Finding Fidel: The Journey of Erik Durschmied,” which recollects a visit to Fidel Castro during the early days of the Cuban Revolution.

The 20th HSDFF will continue screening films through Sunday, and has heard rave reviews for a relaxed and organized atmosphere.

“I can’t tell you how much our volunteers have stepped up this year,” comments Jim Miller, Assistant Festival Director. “This week has been so fun and exiting, probably our best festival in the four years I’ve been here.”

7:00PM- TRUCK SPACE curated by Chris Hughes (Screening Rm, 823 Central, Free)

The two works which comprise the program take as their subject matter the
costs of urbanization at the level of the communal and the personal. Objectively,
they each posit trees as their protagonists, and depict inspiring successes and
heartbreaking failures associated with both collective and individual social action.

In Andrea Bowers’s Vieja Gloria, a community in Valencia, California comes to
collective awareness of the impending loss of a 400 year old oak, which is to be
cut down to further development of a large planned community. Environmental
activist John Quigley takes up residence in the tree for 71 days in a last-ditch
effort to save it, and the ensuing struggle progresses in ways those familiar with
life in post-9/11 America are all too familiar: the establishment of “free-speech
zones”, portrayal of dissent as inherently unpatriotic, and the use of force, on
behalf of corporate interests, against non-violent protesters.

Joel Tauber’s Sick-Amour begins with what appears to be a bleak compromise
suggested by the dilemma of Bowers’s work. A lone tree situated at the center of
a massive parking lot outside the Rose Bowl starves for water and oxygen, is
subjected to damage from cars which park beneath it to take advantage of the
offered shade, and is plagued by disease and pests. Tauber takes it upon himself
to improve the tree’s existence through a campaign including personal attention
to its day-to-day needs, appeals on its behalf to civic and business interests,
and ensuring of its genetic legacy via the widespread planting of its offspring.

–

Midnight- Plan 9 From Outer Space (Central Theatre, 1008 Central Ave., $5)

Ed Wood’s infamous 1959 Sci-Fi, Plan 9 From Outer Space, has often been called “the worst movie of all time.” The film stars Bela Lugosi, who died halfway through the making of the film. Ed Wood improvised, and used a stunt double for Lugosi’s remaining scenes.

$5 admission or free to festival pass-holders.

In Lebanon, demonstrations decrying the Israeli-Palestinian conflict fill the streets every day. Lebanese people from all ages call to cease this ongoing conflict. Three Lebanese artists came across a video game that encourages this conflict and rewards its user anytime a hospital in Gaza gets bombed or a child gets killed. The game calls for more violence between the Israelis and the Palestinians. The more lives you kill the more points you get. These artists begin to develop a game of their own in response. The game is called Gaza Shield and its purpose is to protect as many children from the bombing as possible. The more lives you save, the more points you get.

Graffiti has played a major role in urban identity since its boom in 1970′s New York City. Under the cultural umbrella of Hip Hop, graffiti became a form of artistic escapism from the harsh realities of urban hardship. After 40 years the art form has begun moving from the street and into the galleries and museums of the world. Graffiti, something innately ephemeral, is now being placed into the confines of a sterilized exhibition platform. 65 graffiti writers from all over the world participating in the ‘Graffiti Fine Art’ exhibition in Sao Paulo, Brazil were asked if their work hanging in the museum is even graffiti at all.

Marc H. Simon

Just days before Bernard Madoff captured headlines as the largest ponzi schemer in U.S. history, Marc Dreier, a prominent Manhattan attorney, was arrested for orchestrating a massive fraud scheme that netted hundreds of millions from hedge funds. Brazen forgeries and impersonations branded the white-collar crime spree remarkable. Unraveled is set in the ‘purgatory’ of house arrest, an upper East Side penthouse, where the Court has ordered Dreier confined until his sentencing day.

Vidal Sassoon is more than just a hairdresser- he’s a rock star, an artist, and a craftsman who ‘changed the world with a pair of scissors.’ With the geometric, Bauhaus-inspired hairdos he pioneered in the 1960s and his ‘wash and wear’ philosophy that liberated generations of women from the tyranny of the salon, Sassoon revolutionized the art of hairstyling and left an indelible mark on popular culture. www.vidalsassoonthemovie.com

The Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival has made tentative selections for the 2011 Festival, and are in the process of notifying filmmakers and coordinating scheduling for the 20th Year Anniversary.

“Filmmakers and patrons should be patient,” notes Dan Anderson, Festival Director. “We hope to have all filmmakers notified by early September, with a schedule to follow shortly thereafter.”

Several exciting films of note include “Exotic World and the Burlesque Revival,” which will be making it’s World Premiere in Hot Springs, “With Great Power,” a documentary on comic book legend Stan Lee, and the World Premiere of “Beyond Iconic,” about photographer Dennis Stock, known for his “iconic” photos of James Dean, Miles Davis and others.

“The selection process and notification of filmmakers is always one of the most fun and exciting parts of the job, “ remarks 3rd-Year Assistant Festival Director, Jim Miller.

“My favorite part of the process is the genuine excitement most filmmakers express when we tell them they have been selected. It’s a humbling experience, and reminds us that this remains one of the most prestigious festivals in the World.”

Festival patrons should expect an eclectic mix of documentaries from around the globe, as they have come to expect from HSDFF.

“One one the things we do differently is consider each individual film equally and on it’s own merit,” notes Anderson. “Other festivals may base their selections on ‘hype’ or previous awards, but we are really more interested in content, impact and the genuine craft of the film. That is what makes this such a special festival.”

With less than two months until opening night on Friday, October 14, festival staff and volunteers are busy contacting community supporters and volunteers to help with the event.

“The community comes first,” notes Anderson. “This has been and should remain an organization and event that the people of Arkansas should be proud of, and has the power to make them more engaged, aware and enthralled about the world around them.”

HSDFF is in need of volunteers, advertisers and sponsors to make this 20th Festival a great success. If you would like to contribute or assist in any way, please contact 501-321-4747, or visit the Hot Springs Documentary Film Institute at 819 Central Avenue in downtown Hot Springs, Arkansas.
